IRS Data Retrieval Update for 2017-2018 and 2016-2017

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) is currently not working and has been shut down by the IRS. It is not clear when the IRS DRT will be available again for students and parents to transfer their IRS data to the FAFSA application. In the meantime, students and parents will need to manually fill in the IRS data on the FAFSA application. In addition, students and parents should be encouraged to request an IRS Tax Transcript in case the FAFSA application is selected for verification.

There are three ways to request an IRS Tax Transcript:

  •     Order it online by going to  You will be able to view and print your Tax Transcript immediately. Be sure to select the Tax Return Transcript and not the Tax Account Transcript.
  •     Call 1-800-908-9946 and under the options select IRS Tax Transcript. Do not select IRS Account Summary.
  •     Complete the form 4506-T (IRS Request for Transcript of Tax Return) and submit it to the IRS. It takes about 10 days to receive the transcript from IRS.

Important Update: Until the IRS Data Retrieval is available again for use, students and/or parents may submit a signed photocopy of their IRS Tax forms (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ) along with all other tax documents submitted.

Students must create a FSA ID (Username and Password) to access the Federal Student Aid Websites.
